HEIDI VAUGHAN FINE ART
Escapism (detail), 2019, Emma Balder
Houston, TX – Heidi Vaughan Fine Art is proud to present Connecting Threads, an exhibition of 26 new works of art from fiber painter Emma Balder. Balder’s fiber paintings breathe new life into the smallest parts of textile waste, reassigning the fibers as a medium that functions like paint. The exhibition opens Saturday, October 19, 2019, from 5 pm to 8 pm at the gallery, located at 3510 Lake Street at Colquitt in the Upper Kirby Galleries. It runs through November 23, 2019. An artist’s talk will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 1 pm.
Radical transformation and regeneration are at the core of Balder’s artistic practice. She reconstructs textile waste from makers, artists and designers from all over the world to unveil beauty in the discarded and forgotten. In Connecting Threads, Balder examines the value of connection. Her material exists not as waste, but as cultural compost, reincorporated into the soil that feeds her work.
Place has been the impetus for Connecting Threads. Balder recently transitioned from Denver to Houston, which has led her to new discoveries within herself and her work. She received a BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012. She has shown her work in venues such as Trestle Gallery, New York; Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, Virginia; Aqua Art Fair, Miami; The Lincoln Center, Fort Collins, Colorado; ArtHelix Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; BWAC, Brooklyn, New York; Stella Ripley Contemporary, Quebec, Canada among others. In 2015, Balder completed a Staff Artist Residency Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center and was named a finalist of the Peripheral Vision Foundation Fellowship in 2016. She has facilitated fiber painting workshops throughout Colorado, including at the MCA Denver, and has received support for her work from organizations such as the Dave Bown Projects and Meow Wolf. Balder is a recent partnered artist with PepsiCo’s LIFEWTR; her work will be featured on a bottle design launching in 2020. Her work has been featured in Art Maze Mag, Fresh Paint Magazine, Dialogist, Denver Life, 303 Magazine, Art Reveal Magazine, Ignant, Emboss Magazine, Peripheral Vision Press, and more.
Balder is currently an artist in residence at BOX13 Artspace in Houston, and is represented by Heidi Vaughan Fine Art and Stella Ripley Contemporary.
