“Jetson Vacuum” Fiber Painting

This small, abstract work on paper is what Emma calls a fiber painting. These artworks are created using the smallest parts of textile waste. The material comes from artists, makers and designers from around the world. As a result, each piece is unique in color and style.

In Emma’s process, she uses a paintbrush and painter’s medium to push and pull the fibers along the paper. The artist paints with the fibers. Then, she adds pencil and a small amount of acrylic paint to highlight the shape the fibers take.  Once complete, the artwork is signed and sprayed with a fixative sealant.

“Jetson Vacuum” was one of Emma’s early small fiber paintings, created in 2016. Although small, this work packs a punch and is a great conversation starter. The image of this painting reminded Emma of both an old-school vacuum cleaner and a childhood favorite show, “The Jetsons”.
